The Gaswest Project, a 40 million, three-year development project, was designed to make natural gas available to eleven towns along the Mayo-Galway Pipeline. The availability of natural gas in the area offers both residential and commercial customers real choice and allows them to experience the many benefits of using natural gas.
GMC Group led the way in delivering this project. We were able to resource the project with highly experienced management and skilled personnel drawn from within the Group's resource pool.
Bord Gáis Networks developed a detailed construction programme for the network extensions from the Mayo-Galway transmission pipeline to these towns. GMC led the way with Westport being the first town to be connected in May 2008 and continues to partner Bord Gáis Networks in the rollout of the Feeder and Distribution mains. Distribution (low pressure) pipelines are constructed within each of the towns, allowing business and residential customer connections to the network.
Elsewhere on the Network GMC has been responsible for bringing gas from the main transmission lines, along feeder mains and establishing distribution networks in towns such as Cahir, Cashel, Kinsale/Inishannon, Monasterevin/Portarlington and Tipperary Town.
When Bord Gáis needed a 315mm pipeline installed under one of the widest rivers in Ireland, River Suir, it was to GMC they looked for a solution. Working with specialist drillers GMC were able to bring the project to a successful conclusion over the Summer months of 2010 with minimum disruption to local schools and businesses.
Working in many of these smaller towns can bring its own problems not least of which is the disruption to pedestrian and business life. GMC has shown that with careful planning and close liaison with client and local interest groups pedestrian and traffic management issues can be smoothed out to everyone's satisfaction.
The Group has been among the lead contractors for a number of terms for the Bord Gáis period contract and is currently the period contractor for the North Leinster Region (North Dublin to Dundalk). As well as the period contracts GMC is helping BGE with the rollout of their Accelerated Renewals Programme. Together these two contracts require the skills of in excess of thirty experienced gas squads with the necessary back up and supervisory management.
